Building a better future for our students at Robert Ogden School
Published on 17 March 2026

Our charity’s school in South Yorkshire, Robert Ogden School, is inviting people to attend a community consultation event about the proposed rebuilding of the school.
Robert Ogden School supports more than 150 autistic children and young people from the ages of five to 19 years old, and employs more than 250 people from the local area. It’s our only school in the north of England and serves a wide catchment area across the region.
The school’s buildings were built in 1968 with an expected lifespan of 25 years. In the past year, the school has had to close seven times due to flooding and leaks. Continuing to operate in the current building risks further disruption, distress and missed opportunities at a
crucial stage in students’ development. The infrastructure is now too old and refurbishment is not a viable option.
We plan to build a new state-of-the-art school designed specifically for autistic children and young people aged between five and 19 years old, supporting up to 150 pupils.
Proposed plans for the new site
Designed based on the key principles for an autism-friendly school, the new school would be built on part of the existing adjacent playing fields. This would allow the current school to continue to support pupils while the new one is being built.
The current school buildings will be demolished and new homes will be built on the site. The school’s former residential service Clayton Croft will also be converted into new homes. As the National Autistic Society is not-for- profit, the proposed housing sale would be crucial to partially offsetting the cost of the new school.
Josh Fitzgerald, Director of Education and Children’s Services at the National Autistic Society, said: “We now have an opportunity to build a better school and future for autistic children and young people in the north of England. Before we progress our planning application, we want to ensure that our local community can be heard. We welcome all feedback and encourage as many people as possible to get involved and share their views in the consultation. As always, our absolute priority is to support autistic children and young people to thrive at school.”
A drop-in community consultation event will be held at Robert Ogden School, Clayton Lane, Thurnscoe, S63 0BG between 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday 25th March 2026.
The event will give an overview of the proposed development including the vision, planning and specifics of the proposed new school and homes. The project team will be available to
address any feedback or questions. All feedback will be used to guide any appropriate changes to the project.
Anyone who is unable to attend can find out more about the plans and submit feedback online: https://www.robertogdenschool.org.uk/rebuild or email ROSfeedback@nas.org.uk
