I'm an autistic counsellor and psychotherapist based in Poynton. I work with children, young people and adults either in person or online. I use a blend of psychological theories and personal experience to tailor therapy to each individual.
Autism doesn't need fixing. There can be times of feeling misunderstood, a lack of belonging and shame and stigma. These can all affect your mental health and well being.
I work creatively with children, young people and adults depending on their preferences. This could be sitting talking or no talking and instead use toys and play, arts, sand tray or even a soft tip dartboard!
I have experience working with emotionally based school avoidance or school trauma.
I also work with siblings. The sibling experience is unique. There can be conflicting feelings of wanting your own needs met whilst also knowing your brother or sister's needs may be urgent or they have a greater amount. It may feel like there are pressures to be the 'good' one, the 'healthy/non-disabled' one or an additional carer from family or school. There can also be feelings of difference as your family experiences are different to peers, which could lead to feeling not understood.
Parenting is hard but parenting an autistic child can be more intense. This could be through the constant battles to ensure your child has the right provisions. At times your child's behaviour may trigger something in you that you may want to explore. Or if your child is struggling with school attendance, this can be a hugely stressful and potentially traumatic time.
