Letter template to request a meeting with your child's school

This letter template can be used to request a meeting with the school to talk about the support your child needs. Please copy and paste the draft letter below into a document or email and amend the wording before you send it by:  

  • removing this section of text and the title
  • changing the text in [bold] below to match your details and circumstances.

I am concerned that [my child, insert child's name,] is not making adequate progress in school and may have [in England and Northern Ireland: special educational needs; in Scotland: additional support needs; in Wales: additional learning needs]. 

In particular I am worried about: [list your concerns, eg: 

  • the environment and sensory challenges 
  • learning and schoolwork challenges (eg slow progress in reading or another skill or subject) 
  • social and relationship challenges (eg difficulty making friends; the possibility of being bullied) 
  • mental health and wellbeing challenges  
  • transition challenges.] 

I would like to meet with you to discuss my concerns and what the school can do to help. 

I would also like to bring my friend/advisor [insert their name].  
 

The questions I would like to discuss are: [list questions, eg: 

  • My child does not seem to be happy in school. What can we do to resolve this? 
  • What reasonable adjustments can you make to support my child? 
  • What has been done so far to help support my child and has this made a difference? 
  • How do you work with other services to improve the school experience for children with SEND/SEN/ASN/ALN?] 

Please could you send me a copy of my child's school records and a copy of the school's [in England: SEN or SEND; in Northern Ireland: SEN; in Scotland: ASN; in Wales: ALN] policy. 

I hope we can work in partnership, so that [child's name] can thrive in school and we are confident [her/his/their] needs are being met.
