Autistic adults have a right to flourish. ‘A capabilities approach to understanding and supporting autistic adulthood’ was a research project undertaken by a team of autistic and non-autistic researchers. The study found little research focusing on ‘thriving’ autistic adulthood. Instead, autism was largely conceived as a condition of childhood, governed by an orthodox scientific approach that conceptualises autistic experience as a series of biologically-derived functional deficits.
Our approach focuses on ten core elements of a thriving human life to identify areas where autistic adults currently thrive and areas where they may struggle, thereby effectively signposting directions for services and support.
