We offer training and consultancy support for sports practitioners. These courses aim to provide a comprehensive introduction to the autism spectrum focusing on the delivery of sport and physical activity.

Recognising and understanding the key areas of difficulty experienced by both the participants and the session leaders is vital to providing effective support. The National Autistic Society has developed training materials and information which aim to increase:

  • the confidence and skills of sports and physical activity leaders, delivering inclusive sport and physical activity for autistic people and enabling them to engage and involve vulnerable people in meaningful ways
  • the levels of participation of people on the autism spectrum in sport and physical activity, empowering them to make informed choices about their physical activity and to sustain their involvement over time
  • the self-esteem and wellbeing of autistic people through their participation in physical activity, improving their enjoyment and sense of achievement in their physical abilities.

What can we offer you?

Training course

Our standard package is a one-day autism and sport course which covers the theory around autism as well as practical strategies for sports and physical activity leaders.

We can also deliver this as a half day course which covers the theory of autism and some basic strategies for supporting autistic people in sporting activities.

For a more in-depth session, we can deliver this over two days, enabling a more comprehensive overview of autism and supportive strategies.

Online module

We have an online module, Autism, sport and physical activity, which provides a comprehensive introduction to the autism spectrum, focusing on the delivery of sport.

Consultancy audit

If you want to ensure your sports club or venue are accessible to autistic people, or work on developing this, then our team can support you with this. Our consultancy audit involved one of our autistic consultants visiting your sports club or venue to carry out a specialist consultancy audit, and this will be followed up with a feedback session with our team. Contact us directly at active@nas.org.uk or call us on 0300 303 4313.

The funding from the Active for Autism project enabled us to produce a free Autism, sport and physical activity booklet (PDF download). Written by Amy Webster, with a forward by NAS Sports Ambassador Tom Morgan, it is full of practical strategies to implement in your delivery of sport and physical activity when working with autistic people.
