What can you do for me?

The Education Rights Service provides impartial and confidential information and support to families on school education rights and entitlements.

We can:

  • offer confidential information, advice and support by phone or email
  • explain education law and your rights and entitlements
  • help you explore your options so that you can make informed decisions about your child’s school education
  • help you communicate effectively with your child’s school and education professionals
  • explain complaints and appeals processes and support you if you are making an appeal.

We cannot:

  • provide face-to-face support
  • attend meetings and appeal hearings with you, but we can help you prepare for them
  • contact education professionals or write to them on your behalf, but we can write letters with you
  • promise that you will get all you want – but we will help you try.

Finding answers online

Our service is sometimes very busy – but we have a wealth of information which might answer your query.

Confidentiality and data protection

For training and quality purposes there may occasionally be another person listening to your call. The personal data you provide will be used for administration, statistical and other purposes connected with The National Autistic Society and autism.

Information is not disclosed to third parties for marketing or other purposes not connected with autism. Technical and organisational measures are taken to prevent unauthorised or unlawful processing or disclosure of information.

Referring you on to other organisations

We may at times refer enquirers on to other organisations. We cannot guarantee the service of other organisations we refer you to.

Our Education Advice Lines can help when you want general information about your child’s educational rights and entitlements or advice on specific topics such as getting extra help in school, assessments, education plans, reviews or school transport.

Our Tribunal Support Lines can help you consider your options if you have a right of appeal against a decision about your child’s educational needs.

You can also leave a message on our 24-hour answering service and we will call you back – 0808 800 4102 (free from landlines and most mobiles) and press:

  • England – Option 1 for our Education Advice Line and option 2 for our Tribunal Support Line

  • Northern Ireland – Option 5 for our Education Advice Line and option 6 for our Tribunal Support Line

You will usually hear from one of our specialist volunteers within 3-5 working days, although this can take longer at busy times.

We support over 3,000 families a year, many on an ongoing basis, so there are times when our phone lines get very busy and we may not be able to get back to you as quick as we would like. We will return your call as soon as we possibly can.
