One in 100 people are autistic, which means there are an estimated 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK.

We asked you to walk, run, swim or cycle 7 kilometres in your own time, wherever you are, in support of the 700,000 autistic people across the UK.

Sign up and take part in a challenge adapted to your home, or to your daily outdoor time, and raise much needed funds during this uncertain time. In light of the current government guidelines on social distancing, we’re here to help you adapt your challenge and have already seen some fantastically creative ideas.

When is the challenge?

The challenge was originally set for World Autism Awareness Week (30 March to 5 April), but due to the unforeseen challenges with Coronavirus we extended this deadline. We are currently keeping the challenge open for the foreseeable future so you can sign up and take part at a time that suits you.

How do I sign up?

  1. Sign up and pay the £12 registration fee to receive entry to the event and your free spectrum t-shirt.
  2. Set up a JustGiving page and ask people to sponsor you by sharing on social media, blogging or emailing to family and friends.
  3. Share how your challenge is going online using the hashtag #AutismAwarenessWeek.

How can I complete the challenge if I’m staying at home?

If you are able to safely use an open space following government guidelines, or use your garden, you may be able to complete your original challenge as planned.

If this isn’t feasible, we’ve got some suggestions to help you keep up the physical activity and fit your challenge to do at home. Please only try these exercises if you are physically able, and make sure you’ve researched how to do your chosen activity safely and always warm up and cool down with any physical activity.

The NHS website has some great advice on ways you can exercise in the home, which you can tailor for your challenge.

Here are some examples:
  1. 70 burpees a day for 7 days
  2. 70 sit ups for 7 days
  3. 70 star jumps a day for 7 days
  4. 700 steps a day for 7 days
  5. Plank for 70 seconds for 7 days
  6. An online yoga class every day for 7 days
  7. 70 squats a day for 7 days

If you’re unable to do physical activity download a mediation app like HeadSpace or Insight Timer and try 7 minutes of daily meditation for a week. These apps often have free trials.
