Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism

Mandatory training on learning disability and autism, with the expertise of autistic people, people with a learning disability and subject matter experts.

The training is delivered by the National Autistic Society, who deliver the autism content and have been involved in ‘Oliver’s training’ since 2020, and the Estia Centre, a training centre that specialises in delivering training on learning disability.

Where and when?

About the Estia Centre

Based within South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, the Estia Centre’s mission is to build a healthier future for people with a learning disability and autistic adults by providing specialist training that is uniquely co-produced and delivered in partnership with clinical and subject matter experts alongside people with lived experience.  The Estia Centre lead on delivering the learning disability content of Oliver's Training.

Together we have extensive understanding and experience in autism and learning disability and in delivering the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. We have also been chosen by NHS England to deliver the four-day Lead Trainer Training across England. Training courses are organised in tiers which align to the Core Capabilities Framework. Tier 2: Train the Trainer (Facilitating Trainer)

This is referred to as the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism 2-day faciliating trainer course.

  • For professionals who want to become a facilitator, delivering the Tier 2 1-day training to other professionals in this sector.
  • Delivered by trainers from the National Autistic Society and Estia and co-delivered with an autistic co-trainer and a co-trainer with a learning disability.
  • Face-to-face training at your organisation.
  • 2-day course.

Course requirements

  • Delegates need to have completed the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training e-learning within the previous 6 months.
  • Delegates need to meet the criteria on the person specification form. 
  • Example job descriptions and person specifications - employers can use and adapt these documents and follow their own local HR and job matching processes.

Tier 2: Expert with Lived Experience Co-trainer Training (learning disability)

This is referred to as the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism 3-day expert with lived experience of learning disability co-trainer training.

  • For people with a learning disability who want to co-deliver the learning disability session of the Tier 2 1-day training.
  • 3-day course.
  • Delivered by trainers from the National Autistic Society and Estia and co-delivered with an autistic co-trainer and a co-trainer with a learning disability.
  • Face-to-face training at your organisation.

Tier 2: Expert with Lived Experience Co-trainer Training (autism)

This is referred to as the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism 3-day autistic expert with lived experience co-trainer training.

  • For autistic people who want to co-deliver the autism session of the Tier 2 1-day training.
  • 3-day course.
  • Delivered by trainers from the National Autistic Society and Estia and co-delivered with an autistic co-trainer and a co-trainer with a learning disability.
  • Face-to-face training at your organisation.

Tier 2: Train the Trainer (Lead Trainer)

This is referred to as the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism 4-day lead trainer training.

  • For people who want to become Lead Trainers, delivering all the Tier 2 training options to other professionals.
  • Delivered by trainers from the National Autistic Society and Estia and co-delivered with an autistic co-trainer and a co-trainer with a learning disability.
  • 4-day course.
  • Face-to-face training at your organisation, or available as an open access course for individuals.

Course requirements

  • Delegates need to have completed the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training e-learning within the previous 6 months.
  • Delegates need to meet the criteria on the trainer specification form.

Why is this important?


Oliver McGowan was a young autistic man with a learning disability. Oliver sadly died because staff who cared for him did not have the skills and knowledge to look after him.

Oliver’s Training aims to ensure health and social care staff have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. It has been co-produced, trialled and evaluated with people with a learning disability and autistic people. The Health and Care Act 2022 says that all staff working in Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated services should be trained in how to care for people with a learning disability and autistic people. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred and recommended training to meet the requirements of the Act.

The National Autistic Society (NAS) and Estia, together with our networks of Experts with Lived Experience, are committed to the vision for the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) in Learning Disability and Autism. We bring the experience, national reach, skills and resource needed to deliver this important programme.

NAS, the lead partner, has extensive experience and understanding of Oliver’s training because:

  • we were a consortia organisation for the OMMT in Learning Disability and Autism trial
  • we were a lead organisation in the development of Tier 2 materials and in the delivery of the four-day Lead Trainer training
  • the autism training is led and delivered by the National Autistic Society. The learning disability training is led by partner, Estia, a training centre that specialises in learning disability. Estia has an OMMT-trained Lead Trainer and is already working with NAS on OMMT delivery.

Certification

Upon completion of any of the above courses, delegates will be awarded a certificate of attendance from NHS England. Those completing train the trainer courses will become approved trainers and will also receive a trainer number.
