Why did you register for the Autism Friendly Award?
The Autism Friendly Award provides recognition that the museum has taken steps to create a welcoming and accessible environment for autistic people. We have a range of resources that are available for autistic visitors to try and help them to enjoy their visit, and this award allows us to bring them together.
We are committed to improving the accessibility of the museum and its collection, as we want everyone to enjoy their time with us. The Autism Friendly Award signals to autistic individuals and their families that their needs are valued and understood.

How did the programme support you with reflecting and developing your venue/attraction?
The award application process helped us consolidate resources specifically designed to benefit autistic visitors. These resources are clearly listed on our website. The process allowed us to pinpoint areas within our business where we have made improvements to enhance accessibility.
Once you understand the format, it’s quite straightforward. It’s just a case of identifying and compiling your evidence before submission. It takes some time to pull together all the various elements, but it’s worth it in the end.
What areas of practice did you develop and what impact has this hadon autistic people and their families?
It helped us identify a gap in staff training, which we quickly rectified.
Our goal is to have the full Front of House (FOH) team complete the Understanding Autism training. We have added the Autism training to our FOH induction. From now on, all new starts will complete the training as part of their induction.
