❝Using the workbook challenged us to think critically about how we can improve our offering and make our attraction more accessible.❞
- Katie Lewis, Managing Director
Why did you register for the Autism Friendly Award?
We applied for the Autism Friendly Award because we are committed to being an inclusive attraction for all families. We wanted to ensure that families with autistic members, who might face unique challenges when visiting public spaces, feel welcome and can enjoy the experience at The Ice Cream Farm just like everyone else. We believe that creating a more accessible and supportive environment benefits everyone, and we are proud to be recognised for our efforts.

How did the programme support you with reflecting and developing your venue/attraction?
The framework provided us with a comprehensive guide to assess and reflect on areas of our business where we could improve accessibility for autistic individuals.
It helped us focus on the specific needs of autistic visitors, from sensory sensitivities to communication preferences. By working through the framework, we were able to identify key areas where we could make small yet impactful changes, ensuring a more inclusive experience for all our visitors.
What areas of practice did you develop and what impact has this had on autistic people and their families?
We made several changes to enhance accessibility:
- We introduced clearer signage and visual supports to help visitors navigate the site more easily – for example, having a downloadable sensory map.
- It gave us the drive to plan more enhanced team training to ensure our team is better equipped to understand and support autistic individuals and their families.
- We worked on making sure all the information that visitors need for a day out with us is readily available on our website, ensuring that visitors know what to expect.

❝Gaining the Autism Friendly Award has been a valuable recognition of our commitment to inclusivity.❞
What feedback have you received from autistic people/families who have stayed with you since you received the award?
We’ve received positive feedback from several families. One family mentioned that they felt “so much more relaxed” knowing that there were dedicated SEN sessions where they could visit without feeling judged.
Another family has shared evidence of our award on social media, with many positive responses. These comments really reinforced the importance of our efforts and encouraged us to continue improving.
Although it’s still early days since receiving the award, it’s clear that our SEN sessions remain highly popular. We are hopeful that the ongoing improvements we’re making will be noticed by our regular visitors, demonstrating our continued commitment to being welcoming and understanding of their needs. We’re excited to see this momentum grow as word spreads about our efforts and achievements.
How has gaining the award benefited your business?
Gaining the Autism Friendly Award has been a valuable recognition of our commitment to inclusivity. It not only strengthens our brand and reputation as a family-friendly attraction, but it also helps us to stand out as a place that cares about all visitors, regardless of their individual needs.
This certification, coupled with our already popular SEN sessions and SEN-orientated events, positions us as an attraction that truly values and supports diversity, and we’re excited to see more families enjoy The Ice Cream Farm in the future.
