❝Our consultant was fantastic throughout, and what really helped was the consistency when we embarked on the journey for the second time.❞
- Terri-Anne Nolan, Ward Manager Indigo Ward
Ancora House opened in September 2016 as a brand new purpose built hospital designed by young people.
Ancora House is a specialist inpatient unit for young people who are having difficulties with their thoughts, feelings or behaviour and need a short stay in hospital.
Their staff team consists of psychiatrists, doctors, nurses and support workers, participation workers, clinical psychologists, family therapists and occupational therapists.
Why did you register for the Autism Specialist Award?
Ancora House embarked on the journey in 2021 as a way to improve and support best practice when working with young people who are neurodivergent, including autistic people, and have been admitted to an inpatient hospital.
How did the programme support you with reflecting and developing your service?
The framework helped us to reflect on current practices and change the way we work with the young people.
The process was excellent, well-supported by the National Autistic Society staff and easy to follow and understand. Our consultant was fantastic throughout, and what really helped was the consistency when we embarked on the journey for the second time. We had the same consultant, who was able to review developments made in the three years since the first journey.

What areas of practice did you develop?
- We made environmental changes such as installing ‘sound clouds’ to absorb the noise.
- We changed furniture, removing furniture and purchasing new furniture which better met the sesnory needs of the young people and was more flexible.
- We created Easy Read information to share with young people and families.
- We have incorporated autism training into our local inductions.
How has gaining the award benefited your service?
It has highlighted and recognised the outstanding work of all professionals at Ancora House to support young people admitted into hospital who are neurodivergent.
