On15 May 2025 the National Autistic Society unveiled rare historical records, films, and photographs as part of the "In Our Words" heritage project. This project offers a unique insight into the way autism education and awareness has been shaped over the decades. It aims to share the lived experiences of autistic individuals and those who have supported them.
Sybil Elgar School was proud to host the celebrations. Chloe Phillips, Principal of Sybil Elgar School, said: “The In Our Words project beautifully captures stories that deserve to be remembered.” During the day visitors explored multimedia exhibits that showed the society’s journey since its founding in 1962. There was a particular focus on the pivotal role teacher Sybil Elgar played during those foundational years.
Special guests that were welcomed on the red carpet included: Jane Asher - President of the NAS, Caroline Stevens – CEO of the NAS, Mayor of Ealing, students, staff, families, alumni, and members of the autistic community, many of whom contributed to the project.
With a mission to deliver outstanding education and create a society that works for autistic people, the National Autistic Society and Sybil Elgar School continue to build on 60 years of experience and legacy and looks forward to what the future holds.
