About autism
In the first video of the Embrace Autism series, Sean explores what it means to be autistic, and the different ways of defining autism.
The Embrace Autism series of videos aim to provide post diagnostic support (formal or self-identified) to autistic adults in Scotland.
Top tips
- These films are intended for both formally diagnosed and self-identified autistic people. They will also be helpful if you think you or someone you know might be autistic.
- Both a formal diagnosis and a self-diagnosis of autism are equally valid, in our opinion. There are many practical reasons why accessing a formal diagnosis can be difficult, or in some cases impossible within any reasonable timeframe. Some people also choose not to get a formal diagnosis, for a variety of reasons.
- If you’re waiting to be formally diagnosed, taking notes of how you fit the diagnostic criteria across your own life, which are listed in the useful resources section below, can be helpful for the diagnostic process.
- Thinking about what being autistic means to you can be helpful for when you are talking about being autistic or explaining what it is to be autistic with other people.
