Combined course – Introduction to autism and using the SPELL framework to support people in higher education

This one-day introductory course builds your knowledge of autism and how to support autistic students at university. SPELL is a framework for understanding and responding to autistic people’s needs. It will allow you to develop better practice and use evidence-based strategies to support autistic students.

This course combines our popular individual courses on understanding autism and supporting people on the autism spectrum (SPELL framework) into one day. It goes into less depth than the individual courses, but suits many organisations with limited time. If you're unsure which course will suit you, our training team will be very happy to help.

Providing learners have a degree, this course meets the BIS criteria for university mentors and non-medical helpers.

Course content

  • the main areas of difference in autism (interacting, sensory processing, information processing, communicating)
  • the impact of autism
  • autistic people are individuals
  • causes of anxiety and stress
  • what happens at university for autistic students
  • introduction to the SPELL framework – strategies to adapt your practice and environment to make them more autism-friendly.
