Helping parents to support their child in the early stages of life sets the foundation for children to experience the world around them better. Become an EarlyBird Licensed User and support families with autistic children and young people.

Our EarlyBird programmes help families understand autism, improve communication, and analyse and manage behaviour. Once licensed, you will:

  • receive materials to deliver the programme
  • get ongoing support from the EarlyBird team
  • join our licensed user online group  for sharing best practise.

What are the EarlyBird Parent Support Programmes?

The National Autistic Society has been supporting autism experienced professionals to offer parent programmes to families in their local area since 1998.

  • EarlyBird Licensed Training is a three-month programme for parents whose child has received a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder and is under five years.
  • EarlyBird Plus Licensed Training is a three-month programme for parents whose child receives a slightly later diagnosis (four-nine years).
  • Teen Life Licensed Training is a six-session parent support programme for parents of young people on the autism spectrum aged between 10 to 16 years.

The EarlyBird programme approach will help families to:

  • understand their child’s autism
  • improve communication with their child
  • develop strategies to pre-empt problem behaviours and/or manage those which do occur.

A fantastic course for both parents and practitioners. Fun and interesting and I loved the group activities. We learnt loads and have had good feedback from my colleagues on the info I have shared with them...

- Accompanying professional on the EarlyBird Healthy Minds programme

Following the launch of the EarlyBird programme, a small scale study was carried out with original families after they completed the parent programme. The research, published in the Good Autism Practice, illustrated the effectiveness of the programme. The research found that parents were less stressed at the end of the programme, were using less language with their child and scored as having more positive perceptions of their child’s autism.

As an autism experienced professional you can undertake our Licensed User training courses to deliver our autism specific parent programmes to families in your local area.

Healthy Minds Licensed Training

Over the past year, we have been reviewing all of our EarlyBird products. As part of this review, we have updated the EarlyBird Plus Programme. It will now include some of the areas which were previously covered by our Healthy Minds Programme. The updated EarlyBird Plus will be available to users from September 2019.

In addition, we have found that our Teen Life Programme also includes some areas which are covered within the Healthy Minds Programme. As a result, the National Autistic Society have decided to withdraw Healthy Minds Licensed User training.

We will continue to provide support to existing licensed users until their licence period ends and materials will be available until March 2022.

If you have any questions regarding these changes please address them to healthyminds@nas.org.uk
