Volunteers at The National Autistic Society's Thurrock branch are planning a host of events and activities for local autistic people and their families during the summer holidays.

Our Thurrock branch.

Branch leaders Sam Khan, Nicola Walker along with help from Michelle Bedding and Nicola Scamp have arranged super tubing, swimming sessions, a sensory play workshop, Lego Club, drama and dance sessions to name but a few, to keep everyone busy over the school summer holidays.

Sam Khan, Branch Leader said: "We run these events throughout the summer holidays as we know it can be a very isolating time for autistic people and their families. By organising autism-friendly activities that are fun and exciting, we are giving families the opportunity to get out there and have fun together."

The branch is run entirely by volunteers. When asked what the secret is to the successful delivery of a busy summer schedule of activities, Sam told us “Shared responsibility, we share it out between the four of us and each person takes responsibility for their own bit.”

Our Thurrock branch will also be getting involved with The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour on 2 October 2017, when they will be supporting Lakeside Shopping Centre to become autism-friendly for an hour. They will also use the opportunity to celebrate their second birthday with tea and cakes in the Antrim area of the centre.

What people have said

“Whatever NAS Thurrock do, they are doing right! Keep on doing what you’re doing.”

“A relaxed and fun environment to enjoy activities that others take for granted. A valuable life line for both parents and children.”

“The National Autistic Society Thurrock have given me and my children a safe place to go, where we are not judged by anyone and everyone understands your situation. The summer activities have been brilliant and if I'm honest, a bit of a life saver, as I for one can't take my special needs child to any public events. Lovely atmosphere and The National Autistic Society staff are always so welcoming.”
