Students who attend The National Autistic Society Centre, Kent (Sand) office are working towards Information Technology (IT) certificates. Communication groups are designed to encourage listening, observation skills as well as peer interaction and understanding of verbal and physical language. Work groups examine everyday situations and how to operate and cope within them. In addition, a range of activities are available for all service users, both within the environment of the day services as well as out in the local community. Some students already experience work placements and one aim for the future will be to set up a sheltered working environment with a view to paid employment. There are opportunities for people with autism to either continue or further their education by working towards qualifications and employment prospects. Skills gaining continues within the communication, social skills and flexible thought areas by means of specifically designed programmes. All students will soon have the opportunity to work towards certificated courses in communication and problem solving. Within the day services there are many opportunities to pursue leisure activities within normal community settings such swimming, horse riding, trampolining, Badminton and Gymnasium exercises, the use of leisure centres amenities such as jacuzzi, sauna's, cafes and restaurants..
