Oakley School is the Local Authority District Special School for Tunbridge Wells and surrounding areas. Oakley pupils have a wide range of special needs including complex learning difficulty, severe learning difficulty, social communication difficulties, autism, Asperger syndrome, speech and language delay, language disorder, hearing and visual impairment, co-ordination and motor planning difficulties and specific learning difficulties. Our school is currently located on 2 sites, seven miles apart. The Primary department is at Waveney Road, Tonbridge and the Secondary department and Post 16 Centre are located at Pembury Road, Tunbridge Wells. Most of our primary pupils transfer to the secondary school. The two form entry in the secondary school allows for pupils previously attending other mainstream or special schools to join Oakley at secondary transfer and also at post 16. Classes are organised by year group wherever viable, although there are some mixed age primary groups. All pupils have a statement of special educational needs. Our latest Ofsted Inspection took place at the end of January 2010 and we were delighted to be judged a 'Good School' where "the effectiveness of care, guidance and support" together with "the extent to which pupils feel safe" were both judged to be outstanding. We have already taken action on the two points that Ofsted made where we needed to improve further. Effective communication is the foundation for all aspects of learning.
