As part of the autism strategy, it was "recommended that local areas appoint a lead professional to develop diagnostic and assessment services for adults with autism". The strategy also went on to state that "by 2013, we expect there to be a clear pathway to diagnosis in every area".

Each local area should be looking into how to develop its diagnostic service and appointing a diagnostic lead. Below we have begun the process of mapping diagnostic leads across the country. We want this to become a robust and open source of contact information for professionals to feed into and use. We therefore require details of your local diagnostic leads as they develop. The National Autistic Society and Department of Health encourage you to become part of this useful resource and tell us the details of your local autism diagnostic lead here.
