Our learning environment

Here at Robert Ogden our buildings and facilities are autism-friendly. This means that we’re completely set up to help your child feel understood and welcomed. Inside the school building or outside it, this is the place where you can be confident that your child will be listened to in whatever way they wish, as well as understood and helped to settle down into their everyday routine.

Inside

We have a large main hall for daily school assembly and a second smaller hall where children have their lunch. Some children will eat earlier than others, so that they can do so quietly before everyone else comes in. Your child can be supported at lunch times, or simply have a caring eye kept on them.

The dining hall is also used for enrichment activities, like karaoke and arts and crafts, at the end of every school day. During this time there is an emphasis on PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education).

We have a bright new, purpose-built primary department within our main building with its own separate entrance and outdoor play area. Your younger child will feel secure while still part of the community of the whole school.

We have three IT suites supported by a school network which updated whith new equipment and software in Summer 2016. The network upgrade was paid for by fund raising by staff and supporters of the school.

We have several sensory and dark rooms around the school to help alleviate anxieties which your child may develop during the school day.  Other facilities include a soft play room, sensory movement room, pottery studio, Art room, food techology/cookery room (recently been refurbished), science technology room and library.

There is a fully fitted-out fitness suite for everyone’s use, which our post-16 students use a great deal. It includes running machines, a rowing machine, a bench press and a cross trainer.

The Post-16 facilities include air conditioned class rooms, an IT suite, own lounge, common room and library, as well as individual tutorial rooms.

To help older children become familiar with the challenges of everyday independent living, we have a teaching flat equipped with a dishwasher, cooker, food preparation appliances, cleaning materials, washing machine and dryer. There are also beds to practise making.

Our pupils run the school café using a specially designed kitchen. They decide on the menu, and cook and serve food to other pupils and staff.  The Cafe and kitchen have the highest award, 5 stars from Environmental Health for their cleanliness and hygeine.

Our Inclusive Learning Hubs are specially designed for those pupils, such as those with diagnosis of PDA, who require individual tutorial rooms where their learning can be maximised.

Sports Hall

Our sports hall is the pride of the school. It has been completely modernised and now offers changing rooms with toilet facilities, a new storage area for equipment and high-efficiency heating. The playing surface has been renewed and updated, and energy-efficient lighting has been installed.

Our children and young people use the sports hall for all kinds of PE lessons, including gymnastics and cricket, and for a wide range of sports clubs like trampolining and badminton.

We also have an outdoor football pitch and basketball court.

"I have done a lot of sport volunteering for Rotherham Council so they put me on the FA Level 1 course. I had to do First Aid and Safeguarding Children. On the football side of things I had to do session planning, a session on disability football and what you needed to run and coach a football team."  James, Post-16 leaver

Garden and playgrounds

If your child likes being in the garden, we have flowers and vegetable plots to tend. There is a poly tunnel for raising vegetables and an outdoor vegetable gardening area which is very popular, particularly with our sixth-form students.

We have a beautiful sensory garden which our children use regularly. And of course we offer modern playground equipment, so that your child can swing, climb, rock and slide in complete safety and security.
