Sometimes autistic people may find communicating with other people and social situations more challenging than others. We provide a variety of opportunities for people to learn new social skills, meet new people and try new activities in a group setting.

Adult social groups

Our adult social groups in Durham each take place on the last Monday of every month from 7-9pm. They involve a combination of activities in the wider community and activities and events in our base in each location.

Members of the social groups are invited to make suggestions on what they would like to get involved in, and some things the groups have participated in include meals out, film nights, quizzes, a Halloween party, going to the local climbing wall, BBQs and even a trip to the theatre.

Members of the social group are asked to pay £5 per session plus any additional costs for travel and activities. We also have social groups in nearby Newcastle and Sunderland.

Student social group

We also arrange a social group on the first Monday of every month between 5-7pm for autistic students at New College Durham. We support them to build their social skills and confidence in higher education, meet new people and try new things in the community. The sessions are funded by the college, so members are only asked to pay for activities we access locally, such as going out for a meal.

How to access our support

Sometimes our social groups require a small payment per session to cover the costs of activities. You might be able to access certain benefits to pay for this.
