Autism is a serious, lifelong and disabling condition. Without the right support, it can have a profound sometimes devastating effect on individuals and families. It is a spectrum condition, which means it affects each person in a different way.
People with autism can find it incredibly hard to make sense of the world. Everyday life can be confusing, meaningless or even frightening. Understanding and communicating with other people is particularly difficult, and this can leave people very isolated.
Daldorch House School in Ayrshire, Scotland, is our 52-week residential school for children and young adults with autism. It's the only one of its kind in Scotland. This year we opened a new Senior Campus and Continuing Education Centre which provides young adults aged 16-21 with a continuing education that they very often miss out on.
Music is a significant part of the curriculum. For young people who struggle to communicate, music can mean so much more than words - it can break the isolation they face and be a powerful means to express themselves and interact with others.
By donating a piece of memorabilia, whether its a guitar, a beat-up cymbal or a sweaty gig shirt, you can help us raise money to ensure that music continues to be a key part of student life at Daldorch House School. Your help could really make an impact in what can be a world of confusion and isolation.
"Sometimes it's like I'm a wasp trapped in a jar. I can see and hear the people all around me, but every time I try to get into their world, I just keep buzzing and bumping against the glass."
