With Dr Khalid Karim and Sarah Baines

Dr Khalid Karim is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for Leicestershire NHS Partnership Trust, and Senior Teaching Fellow for the University of Leicester. Khalid is the lead on ASD at Leicestershire Trust and works clinically with children with the condition.

A practical guide to mental health problems in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.Khalid has a general research interest in child mental health, particularly the neurodevelopmental conditions which include ASD, and is currently involved in developing the local care pathways. His research has focused on the decision making of clinical staff and is currently looking at how they assess and manage co-existing problems in children with ASD. He has recently published a book for parents and professionals on autism and mental health with Jessica Kingsley Publishers and is currently writing a further one on ASD/ADHD. He is also undertaking a Masters in Medical Education.

The session will be co-facilitated by Sarah Baines, a Specialist Nurse for ASD at the Leicestershire Partnership Trust who has a background in working with children who have Learning Disability and Challenging behaviour. She is currently studying for a Masters in the Autism Spectrum in Sheffield. She has extensive experience of children who self-injure as part of their condition.

This Masterclass will explore self-harm and self-injury in autistic individuals.

Learning objectives

  • to explore what is meant by the terms self-harm and self-injury
  • examine the underlying reasons why these behaviours may be occurring
  • reflect on how these actions can affect those working and living with these people
  • look at strategies which may be useful in helping with self-harming and self-injury
  • think about what other resources may be available. 

The content of the session will be applicable to those working with autistic children or adults.
