This course combines an introduction to autism with a practical focus on how you can help autistic children and adults take part in sport and physical activities.
- What is autism?
- How does autism affect people’s experience of sport and physical activity?
- Coaches’ experiences of working with autistic people
- How can I help? Using structure, positive approaches, empathy, low arousal and links (SPELL)
- Practical demonstration of strategies and activity plans (dress appropriately for physical activities)
- Evaluating and developing your practice
We deliver this course using presentation, group interaction, self-directed learning, physical activity and video. Participants are advised to come dressed appropriately to allow them to participate in physical activities.
Do you need more depth?
We run a two-day course that looks at autism, sport and physical activity in more depth. If you’re unsure whether you’re better suited by our one-day or our two-day course, our training team is happy to talk through the courses with you.
Who should attend?
You may be a sports specialist who works with autistic children or adults, or you may support autistic children or adults and want to find out how best to help them enjoy sport. You need no prior knowledge of autism.
This course will give you a good understanding of autism, how it affects people differently, and the barriers it can create to enjoying sport and physical activity.
We bring theory and practice together so you can reflect on your own skills, interests and communication styles, and leave the day ready to develop your own practice.
You’ll meet fellow practitioners and work with our trainer, Amy Webster, who combines a background in Physical Education with many years’ experience of supporting autistic people. On completion of the course you can join Network Autism, our online professionals’ forum.
