Understanding and supporting older autistic adults

How does ageing affect autistic adults? This half-day course examines what we know about the ageing process and how it may affect autistic people. You’ll learn practical strategies to support people from middle age onwards.

We’ve developed this course based on the findings of The National Autistic Society's Autism in Maturity projects.

Course content

  • Autism and ageing – what do we know so far?
  • Risks to the quality of autistic people’s lives
  • Research evidence into the potential outcomes for autistic adults
  • Possible effects of ageing for autistic adults
  • Physical and mental health changes associated with ageing
  • Supportive approaches

Who should attend?

This course is designed for people who work with older autistic adults. You’ll need an understanding of autism and experience of working with autistic people.

If you know little about autism, combine this course

We can also deliver this course as part of a one-day package that begins with a morning session on understanding autism. This works well for organisations with limited experience and understanding of supporting autistic people.

Why attend?

This is a relatively new field and many professionals feel under-informed. We’ll share key research and knowledge, and recognise its limitations. We’ll look at issues such as living arrangements, employment, physical and mental health, and you’ll identify specific strategies for supporting older autistic people.  You’ll meet fellow practitioners and work with an NAS trainer who has many years’ experience of supporting autistic people. On completion of the course you can join Network Autism, our online professionals’ forum.
