From Carol Povey, Director of the Centre for Autism at The National Autistic Society and Chair of the Professional Conference Editorial Board
I’m delighted to invite you to this year’s Professional Conference run by The National Autistic Society.
With yet another year of cutbacks in funding and resources, we wanted to focus on the positive work being done to improve the lives of people on the autism spectrum. We are also excited about all the new ways in which attitudes and thinking about autism are being challenged – both in campaigns such as the Justice for LB Bill and also in new research and practices which overturn traditional views and prejudices. That is why the theme for the conference this year is Exploring new thinking and approaches.
Our experts on the Editorial Board have worked hard to develop yet another outstanding programme, drawing together examples of best practice across the different sectors. Keynote sessions given by top international and UK speakers will present an overview of the changing autism environment. Plus, our series of expert seminars will provide you with practical strategies to implement with your colleagues.
Don’t miss out! Register before it's too late.
Seminar topics at this year’s conference include:
- improving support for autistic pupils within special schools
- multi-agency approaches to safeguarding adults
- anxiety and mental health in schools
- PDA – what is it and how to support individuals with the diagnosis
- sexuality and Gender Identity Disorder
- creative routes into employment
- parent-mediated therapy – working with parents to support their child’s needs*
- motor development and its relationship to other developmental aspects.
*Read this exciting new article by Professor Jonathan Green about his seminar on 'Putting parents at the heart of early intervention for autism'. Download the article here.
I am also excited to announce that we’ll be hosting our Autism Professionals Awards again this year. You can read more about the Awards and how to nominate a colleague or your own team here.
I hope that by providing this forum to share the creative and innovative work being done across the UK and worldwide, we can work together to improve delivery of services and ensure that people with autism get to live the life they choose.
