Privacy policy

The website of The National Autistic Society (NAS) is vital in communicating:

  • information about autism and Asperger syndrome
  • the work of the NAS both to our long-term supporters and occasional visitors.

This privacy policy explains to website users how the NAS may use the information you provide and how the Society may communicate with you in the future.

What information does the NAS collect and what do we do with it?

1. Cookies and visitor logs

Cookies are small files which many websites transfer to your hard disk but do not:

  • identify you the individual user
  • carry personal information (such as your name or bank account number)
  • harm your PC.

The NAS uses cookies to bring you a more personalised website visit. They follow the trail of your visit and provide information to help build up a picture of what interests you so that the NAS can try its best to provide information that is pertinent to you.

If you have set your browser not to use cookies this facility does not work. Please be aware that disallowing cookies may also affect the way the website can work but will not affect the security of encrypted online financial transactions you may have authorised.

The NAS also looks at the statistics of the use of the website to try to make sure the site is delivering the right information to the right people in the most appropriate way.

Further information about cookies can be found in 'Related resources' below.

2. Personal data

The NAS can only access your personal data if you provide it. On this site there are several areas where you are asked to give personal data eg making an enquiry to the Autism Helpline or by subscribing to an enewsletter.

When you give us personal information you can be confident that its use will be restricted to The National Autistic Society unless you have given us consent to do otherwise. If you give us your name, postal address or email address and you have consented to receive further information from us, you may be mailed with occasional information from us such as keeping you up to date with our work eg sending you details of our Christmas cards, calendars and other products.

Security

When you give us financial information you can be assured that the NAS takes your security very seriously and employs outside agents to ensure your protection and peace of mind.

Our online transactions, including donations, are handled by WorldPay who provide the highest levels of security at every step of donation processing. Owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland, WorldPay uses state-of-the-art technologies to ensure that all transactions are encrypted between your browser and the server. Nobody is able to obtain your credit card details or other information: WorldPay's system allows us to process your credit card payment safely with the bank, and complete the financial transactions securely behind protected firewalls and by the use of encryption such as the SSL protocol.  Look out for https:// in the address line when you come to give your financial data.  No personal or financial details are left unencrypted on a remote server, and such details are never sent by email.

To make the most of the security on our site, it is recommended that you use either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or higher, both of which enable SSLs. It is also recommended that you set your browsers preferences to accept cookies and enable JavaScript.

The NAS strives to keep its records up to date. Please write or email the Society with any changes to the personal details you have previously supplied, addressing it to the relevant department holding your details (eg Membership) to:
