This one-day course is for those wishing to increase their knowledge or practice relating to autism. Some autism knowledge is required for this course.

You will use the SPELL framework as part of this training to reflect on your practice and plan how you will use the knowledge gained to influence the support you provide to people with autism. SPELL is a framework for understanding and responding to the needs of children and adults on the autism spectrum, developed through evidence-based practice.

Key aims

By the end of this one-day programme you will:

  • understand the difficulties people with autism have with social aspects of communication
  • understand the differences in use of language and communication for those on the autism spectrum and how to use a range of strategies with different people
  • understand the differences in social interaction in people with autism
  • be more aware of and be more confident in using a range of strategies to support the development of social interaction skills.

Further information

Participants will be helped to make the link between theoretical knowledge and practice. The course places emphasis on reflective practice and examination of the participant's skills, attitudes and communication style with tools to enable your continued development. It makes use of presentation, group interaction, self-directed learning and video.
