    Description
The Social Group is aimed at people with Asperger Syndrome and high-functioning autism, who are aged 18 and above. The Group meets every last Wednesday of the month in a supportive setting where members feel accepted and know what to expect from the evening. Group members know who will be there because only invited people can attend. The meetings are aimed at people who can socialise independently. We do not offer individual support during the group meetings. Therefore the groups are not suitable for those who need one-to-one or personal care assistance. There will be no support workers or parents in the groups. You are welcome to bring along someone to support you for the first meeting. After that, if you feel you need to bring someone along in future groups, this will need to be discussed and agreed by the facilitators and group members. Membership is free of charge. The members of the group will decide on the activities of the group but they can include ten pin bowling, ice skating, cinema, meals out, pub quizzes and even rock climbing! However, no member is pressurised into engaging in any activity that makes them feel uncomfortable.

The schedule of outings is prepared using the members’ requests and suggestions and is sent to the members in advance. Previous outings included visits to the National History museum, a trip to Brighton, a visit to the London Planetarium and a boat trip on the Thames.
There will be limited spaces for the social group so you need to put your name down for it in advance, (no more than one month in advance). This is to ensure that many people have the opportunity to attend the outings. The group meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month and the meeting time/place is determined by the nature of the outing.

  • NAS Surrey Service - Godalming Drop In Group
    www.autism.org.uk

    Description
The Drop In Centre is a place to meet other people who also have Asperger syndrome and maybe even make friends. One of the main activities offered is Social Skills. This means trying to explain why people expect us to behave in certain ways. Sometimes, the centre helps with advice and hints on special problems, such as making telephone calls or going to job interviews. The people who come to the Centre are all aged between 18 and 40 years. Some come from as far away as Basingstoke. Some drive to the Centre in their own cars; others take the bus or train. What is important to know is that the group decides what they would like to do, not the co-ordinator. The drop in centre always takes place on the first Friday and third Monday in every month, from 7pm to 9pm. You can come every month or just every couple of months. Once you've been to the centre, it does not mean you must come again - it is up to you to decide which topics may be most helpful to you. Some of the people who come to the centre don't necessarily come because they need help. Instead it is an opportunity for them to get out and socialise.
