This programme, which runs for 5 sessions beginning on 20 June 2012, is for parents/carers of children and young people aged between 9 and 13 years. The programme sessions cover autism and diagnosis, building self esteem, education, managing difficult behaviour and relationships/sexuality. Please feel free to bring your own lunch if required - there is also a cafe available on site. Two members per family may attend (or one family member and a friend). We are told as parents that our children's special educational needs can be met in their local mainstream school. However is the experience of being included the same for all children and their parents? Do children and young people enjoy the same equality of access and opportunity? Do they feel included in their school community? Are they making academic and personal progress? If not, what can we do as parents and who do we turn to for support in a system where education reforms are changing how schools are financed, managed and measured while enjoying increased autonomy? Who is the "champion" for the vulnerable child? Please come and meet legal professionals to advise on the law and education professionals and other parents to discuss these questions and more. Hear updates on the education legislation and policy and share your views and experiences. Improve your understanding of the best way forward in securing high quality educational provision and outcomes for vulnerable children and young people. Arrive from 9.30 for a 10am start. Main speakers finish at 1pm. Lunch from 1pm with the opportunity to continue discussions. Close at 2.30pm. Tea, coffee and a light lunch is provided free of charge.
