Autism: what is it?
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability. While all people with autism share three main areas of difficulty, their condition will affect them in very different ways. Some are able to live relatively 'everyday' lives; others will require a lifetime of specialist support.

Asperger syndrome: what is it?
Asperger syndrome is a form of autism, a condition that affects the way a person communicates and relates to others. People with Asperger syndrome may find difficulty in social relationships and in communicating, and limitations in social imagination and creative play.

Branches in Wales
Each NAS Branch provides a range of activities which may include: self-help support for parents and carers; information and advice; the running of workshops and seminars; organising respite care/holiday schemes.

Befriending
Befrienders spend a few hours each week with a person with autism or Asperger syndrome or their family. Befrienders can help break the wall of isolation for families and individuals whose lives are affected by autism. We match volunteers to families and individuals who have something in common.

What is involved in becoming a Befriender?
Information on commitment and training requirements.

Volunteering as a Befriender
Befriending offers the opportunity for a one-to-one relationship between someone directly affected by an autistic spectrum disorder or a family member and a volunteer befriender.

The NAS is committed to increasing the amount of content on the website which is available in Welsh.
