Here are some of the questions that we are often asked about volunteering for The National Autistic Society (NAS).
I want to volunteer with the NAS. How can I find out what roles are available?
We have offices, schools and services where volunteering opportunities may be available, throughout the UK. We're also supported by volunteers fundraising in the community and have telephone and email-based volunteer opportunities so you can volunteer from just about anywhere. Find all of our current volunteering opportunities online.
I have a general question about volunteering with the NAS. Can I see your volunteering policy?
Yes, our volunteering policy is a public document that anyone can access. It sets out the general principles of volunteering with the NAS.

I don’t have experience of autism. Can I still volunteer?
Many roles just require your time, energy and enthusiasm! Our volunteer role profiles will show any additional skills or experience you may need, and we can provide information and training on autism if it's required for a particular role.
Will volunteering guarantee me a job with the NAS?
Volunteering with the NAS will not guarantee a job with us. However, volunteers can apply for paid vacancies and volunteering experience is often beneficial in applications for paid jobs, both with the NAS and elsewhere.
Can I claim expenses?
Volunteers should not have to be out of pocket as a result of volunteering for us. We reimburse reasonable travel costs to and from your volunteer role location and other expenses subject to prior agreement.
Can I claim benefits while volunteering?
Volunteering your time for the National Autistic Society will not prevent you from claiming, or continuing to receive, benefits. You would have to fulfil your obligations relating to any benefits you may be entitled to, for example you would need to make sure that you were looking for employment if you are in receipt of Jobseekers’ Allowance. We recommend that you let your benefit advisor or contact know that you are volunteering.
I don't live in the UK. Can I still volunteer with the NAS?
We can only accept you as a volunteer if you live within the UK. If you are planning to live in the UK in the future, it may be better if you contact us after you have moved here, so we can advise you on volunteer roles we may be recruiting for at that time. The National Autistic Society does not support any applications for visas, etc.
I have a visa to stay in the UK. Can I volunteer with the NAS?
If you are from the European Union, you are free to volunteer in the UK. If you are from a country outside of the EU, you'll need to check that your visa allows you to volunteer. We advise that you contact the UK Borders and Immigration Agency to find out. The National Autistic Society is not able to sponsor volunteer visas.
