Would you like to help young people with Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism develop their social skills and self-confidence?

The NAS runs a number of out of school clubs in the south west of England. We would like to hear from people who are interested in volunteering at these clubs.

No previous experience is necessary as we will provide training. Volunteers will support the club's project leader, working one-to-one with participants or helping with group activities. We welcome the skills, abilities and qualifications volunteers bring to their role and will seek to utilise these wherever possible.

Volunteering in an out of school club offers:

  • valuable work experience
  • access to a range of training opportunities
  • training costs and expenses paid
  • the chance to develop a career in the play setting (we will provide references for our volunteers)
  • the enjoyment and satisfaction of working with a group of children and young people and supporting their progress
  • opportunities for fun: volunteers have enjoyed archery, rafting and cinema visits.

In return, we ask that our volunteers make a committment to attend the clubs and training sessions, maintain confidentiality, and learn with and support the group. Please see the volunteers' pack in 'Related resources' at the bottom of this page for more information.

About our out of school clubs

Out of school clubs support children and young people with Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism between the ages of eight and 18.

They offer participants the opportunity to join a structured youth group which will meet their individual needs and provide a safe enviroment. Children and young people accessing the groups have been shown to develop better social skills and increased confidence. Some of the young people have since found employment; others have joined mainstream social and leisure activities.
