Westende Junior School
The Acorns Resource at Westende Junior School provides a secure and 'autism friendly' learning environment, where 12 pupils' idiosyncratic needs and strengths are realised in order to aid successful inclusion in junior school activities. Children with a diagnosis of autism are taught in small group settings alongside mainstream pupils of similar academic ability. Specialised equipment in the sensory room is utilised to address anxieties and fears so that they can be independently managed by the children. Sensory integration difficulties are recognised and appropriate provisions are employed to encourage the development of personal coping strategies. Programmes are delivered to develop social communication and interaction skills, problem solving, listening and motor co-ordination skills. Sherbourne Developmental Movement is used to develop body awareness, co-operation skills and a sense of trust. The pupils have weekly access to a specialist speech and language therapist. Places are allocated through the local authority (LA).
