This two-day course will help you to learn about supporting people with autism using the TEACCH programme.
TEACCH stands for 'Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children'. The primary aim of TEACCH is to help to prepare people with autism to live or work more effectively at home, at school and in the community.
The course is intended for those with little or no prior knowledge of autism, or those who already have some knowledge and training who wish to increase and develop their knowledge and skills, and to review and reflect on their practice (completing day two only).
Course content
- introduction to autism spectrum disorders
- communication and behaviour
- exploring the issues for people with autism and those who support them
- overview and key principles of TEACCH
- TEACCH visual communication systems and schedules
- structuring the environment
- the TEACCH programme in practice.
Key aims
By the end of this two-day programme you will:
- understand improved adaptation: through the two strategies of improving skills by means of education and modifying the environment for people with autism
- understand parent collaboration: parents work with professionals as co-therapists for their children so that techniques can be continued at home
- understand assessment for individualised treatment: unique educational programmes are designed for each person on the basis of regular assessments of abilities
- understand structured teaching: it has been found that children with autism benefit more from a structured educational environment than from free approaches
- understand skill enhancement: assessment identifies emerging skills and work then focuses upon these (this approach is also applied to staff and parent training)
- understand cognitive and behaviour therapy: educational procedures are guided by theories of cognition and behaviour, suggesting that difficult behaviour may result from underlying problems in perception and understanding
- understand generalist training: professionals in the TEACCH system are trained as generalists who understand the whole child and do not specialise as psychologists, speech therapists, etc.
