Our postgraduate certificate in Asperger syndrome is a successful collaboration between The National Autistic Society and Sheffield Hallam University, which has run since 2003.

The course is offered nationally and in future, we plan to offer it internationally, as it is the only qualification of this kind. The course has been sponsored and developed with support from The Asperger Syndrome Foundation founder Beatrice Buisseret.

Course speakers include Dr Luke Beardon, Dr Jacqui Ashton Smith and speakers with Asperger syndrome.

Course content (module 1)

Day 1 - an introduction to Asperger syndrome; psychological theories of Asperger syndrome.
Day 2 - Asperger syndrome and social communication difficulties; an individual's perspective.
Day 3 - Asperger syndrome and sensory differences; challenging behaviour in Asperger syndrome; high risk and offending conduct; an individual's perspective.

Credits awarded

This course consists of two modules. Module 1 awards 30 academic credits at Masters level after submission of a 6,000-word assignment.

To achieve the postgraduate certificate and a further 30 credits at Masters level, students must complete Module 2, a reflection of professional learning unit and another 6,000-word assignment. This credit can be used towards a full Masters. Participants should hold a degree or equivalent.

Course fees

£840 per module, payable upon the commencement of each module.

The course is also available on an attendance-only basis at £218 plus VAT per day.
