Background to course
Since February 2006 courses for applied psychologists have been run at the Lorna Wing Centre and integrated into the ongoing professional training programme offered. The course was originally developed in response to feedback from psychologists attending the DISCO training who were keen for an in-depth course exploring assessment practice. Courses have now been developed so they focus on either children or adults and the content is varied accordingly.
Target audience
This course has been developed to meet the CPD needs of applied psychologists who have specialised in the field of autism. Ideally, participants will have a good working knowledge of autism and experience of assessment with the target group, to enable advanced skills and knowledge to be explored. Participants are likely to be employed in specialist roles or as part of multi-disciplinary teams for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Those attending to date have included not only educational and clinical psychologists but also neuropsychologists and counselling psychologists.
This course may complement the CPD needs of those who have already attended the DISCO training course run at the centre but it is not necessary to have competed the DISCO training to benefit from this course.
Aims of the course
- To explore some of the complexities of assessment for those with autism and related conditions.
- To highlight the role psychological assessment can play in supporting diagnostic practice.
- To introduce the concept of a ‘dimensional assessment framework’ developed at the centre.
- To reflect on some current research issues.
- To consider resource implications.
The course will be presented by Dr Sue Sheppard, specialist educational psychologist, with support from the team at Elliot House.
