Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is split into two parts, or components - mobility and care - but you can apply for both on the same form. These components are divided into further levels, according to the applicants own level of need.

For mobility there are two levels, lower and higher, and for care there are three levels - low, middle and high. Some of the queries that The National Autistic Society (NAS) responds to frequently are from parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder who are receiving the lower rate of the mobility component when they feel they should be receiving the higher rate. We also receive queries from parents whose children have had the mobility component reduced from the higher to the lower rate after they have completed a renewal form.

The information below explains the criteria for receiving the highest rate of the mobility component in respect of children and provides advice on how to maximise the chances of it being awarded.
