A researcher at the University of the West of England is studying mother’s experiences of raising a child with autism. The focus will be on comparing experiences of mums who have a diagnosis for their child and those who do not yet have a diagnosis for their child.

No studies have yet looked at the effect of non-diagnosis on the parents and this is what the researcher wants to explore by looking at a mother’s stress, coping and health-related quality of life. she is hoping to publish the findings to further highlight the need for better support for children and their families during the diagnosis process.

If you are raising a child whom you believe has high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome could you spare 20 minutes or so to fill in the questionniare?

The researcher is using very popular and validated questionnaires to measure parental stress, coping methods and quality of life. Some seem quite long but usually it will take no more than 15 minutes to finish the whole survey.
