The National Autistic Society has been working in partnership with Picturehouse cinemas since January 2009 on a series of autism-friendly cinema screenings across their network.

These screenings are designed for people on the autism spectrum, their families, friends and carers. During the film, low lights are left on inside the auditorium and the volume of the soundtrack is reduced. Cinemagoers are free to move around, make a noise or take a break during the film if they need to.

The cinema is often not a place that is easily accessible for families affected by autism. These screenings aim to make families feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed in an environment that can otherwise seem traumatic - among other families experiencing similar issues.
