Many children with autism experience bullying at school, and this can have a negative impact, affecting their self-esteem, education and their well-being.

What we’re doing

In response to the Scottish Government’s consultation ‘A national approach to anti-bullying for Scotland’s children and young people’ (February 2010), NAS Scotland has highlighted the devastating impact bullying can have on children and young people with autism.

Concerns are raised that autism is a hidden disability and often overlooked in anti-bullying strategies. We have called for clearer guidance on bullying and disability and for children and young people with autism to be properly supported in school.

We continue to highlight the challenges faced by children with autism due to bullying and are awaiting the Scottish Government’s new strategy.
