The Welsh Assembly Government is seeking to issue new guidance on Community living: support and accommodation for adults with a learning disability. This will affect people with autism because many also have a learning disability.
What we’re doing
The National Autistic Society (NAS) Cymru has responded to a consultation on the draft guidance, arguing that we would like to see the guidance look more positively to the Welsh Assembly Government’s ASD Strategic Action Plan policy initiative. We have commended the new guidance for its person-centred nature, but also recommended that the guidance be amended to take into account sensory considerations in housing design. We have highlighted transition issues, and the importance of good care assessments.
NAS Cymru strongly believes that it is essential that any person making a community living proposal on behalf of a person with an ASD should have a good understanding of ASD and how the condition affects the individual concerned. We will continue to promote this view at every opportunity.
