The ASD Strategic Action Plan was very child-focused in terms of actions. We asked the Welsh Assembly Government to put a stronger focus on adults with autism. The Government agreed to set up an Adult Task and Finish Group to explore specific areas affecting adults, including access to services and community and monitoring support.

What we’re doing

NAS Cymru sat on the Task and Finish Group and chaired the sub-group tasked with making recommendations on community and monitoring support, and its recommendations have been accepted in full by the Minister.

Recommendations include the setting up of regional monitoring/support for adults with Asperger syndrome (the Assembly Government has made £80,000 available to each region for this task), awareness-raising materials for practitioners working with adults with learning disabilities and autism, training for advocacy personnel for people with autism, and a website with information for adults with autism and their carers.

NAS Cymru will monitor and support progress through its membership of the Welsh Assembly Government’s national ASD Stakeholder Group, and is pleased to offer its support to the Welsh Assembly Government in the development of the support and information packages.
