Published in April 2009, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Autism Spectrum Disorder Strategic Action Plan set out how the Welsh Assembly Government and local bodies would seek to meet the needs of people with autism and their families in Wales.

The action plan stipulates that commissioners should ensure that children and young people’s plans and local health, social care and well-being strategies include an overview of the arrangements for commissioning of services for children, young people and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) over the lifetime of the plans, including those commissioned locally or otherwise.

The plan also states that commissioners and service providers in social care should support the provision of ASD awareness training for all professionals who may come into contact with people with an ASD.

What we’re doing

The National Autistic Society (NAS) Cymru worked alongside the Welsh Assembly Government and others in the voluntary and statutory sectors in the production of the ASD Strategic Action Plan.

NAS Cymru is a member of the Welsh Assembly Government’s national ASD Stakeholder Group, which evaluates and monitors the progress of the plan. NAS Cymru is also a member of a large number of local stakeholder groups at the local authority level, which should be engaged and enabled to feed ideas into the local direction of autism service delivery.

We will continue to monitor progress and are very happy to assist and advise local authorities on their delivery of social care to people with autism in their local areas.
