In June 2009 the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland launched its Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Strategic Action Plan. The plan is based on the findings and recommendations contained in the Independent Review of Autism Services chaired by Lord Maginnis.

The plan aims to ensure a new approach to the delivery of autism specific services. It recognises the need to improve commissioning and provision of ASD services, training and education so that there is earlier recognition, intervention and support for people with an ASD and their families. A Regional ASD Network has been launched to oversee and ensure the implementation of the action plan.

There are a number of different actions within the plan to develop care pathways, family support, shape best practice and scope the need for services for adults with autism. Alongside the improved provision for and recognition of the needs of people with autism, there is an emphasis on involving people with autism, their parents and carers in ensuring the implementation of the plan.

The new care pathways should in theory make it easier for parents to identify and access the services they require and provide a consistent level of support. There is now also a dedicated ASD coordinator for each trust area.

Plans are ongoing to improve autism services for children and adults in Northern Ireland. The Regional ASD Network, set up by the Health and Social Care Board (HSC) to implement the Autism Action Plan, has already made much progress.
