Studio III management of challenging behaviour - 3 day workshop
This ‘management of challenging behaviour’ course is designed to address the sorts of problems participants meet every day in their work and give them better solutions and strategies to cope with them. Course outline: Policy on the management of challenging behaviour; clearing up the grey area around physical interventions and restraint; Understanding the nature of violence expressed by people with an autism spectrum condition (ASC) or learning disability; Low arousal approaches; Gentle physical skills, the occasional necessity; Practicing low arousal approaches and physical skills together; Learning the restraint procedure; walking a client safely; and Role play. Course outcomes: To increase staff confidence in the management of challenging behaviour; To provide staff with the skills to defuse challenging situations with the aim of negating the need for physical intervention; To provide staff with an understanding of some of the causes of challenging behaviour, particularly relating to autism, to help view services users in a more positive way; To make staff aware of the importance of working within the law and the need for and use of policies; To emphasise the importance of de-briefing after incidents; and To provide staff with a range of physical intervention skills which are safe and acceptable to both staff and service users alike.
